Independent Commissioner Against Corruption (OICAC) plays a crucial role in preventing, detecting, investigating, and responding to improper conduct across all levels of public service. Supported by dedicated staff within ICAC, they are an essential pillar in upholding transparency and accountability in public affairs.

Your new role

As a Legal Officer, you will be instrumental in providing expert legal advice and representation, ensuring the Independent Commissioner Against Corruption (ICAC) effectively discharges its statutory functions. Reporting directly to the ICAC General Counsel, your responsibilities will include:

  • Offering independent, timely, and accurate legal advice and representation to the ICAC, including on moderately complex matters, under the guidance of the ICAC General Counsel.
  • Providing legal support and guidance to staff involved in assessments, investigations, evaluations, reviews, and prevention activities.
  • Assisting in the preparation of reports, including investigation reports and general reports, to support ICAC's transparency and accountability.
  • Contributing to the development of policies and procedures to ensure ICAC meets its statutory responsibilities.
  • Instructing counsel and appearing as counsel assisting the ICAC during examinations under the ICAC Act.
  • Enhancing inquiry processes, investigation strategies, and conducting legal training internally and externally.

What you'll need to succeed

To excel in this pivotal role, you will need:

  • A law degree or equivalent, with eligibility for admission as a legal practitioner in the Northern Territory.
  • Exceptional communication skills, capable of articulating complex legal concepts in oral and written forms clearly and effectively.
  • A strong ability to provide legal advice in areas such as criminal law, public law, or administrative law, producing high-quality, comprehensible written legal documents.
  • Excellent organisational skills, with the capacity to work under pressure, make sound judgments, and prioritize tasks in a dynamic environment.

Desirable:
Knowledge of the Northern Territory Public Sector, Local Government, the criminal justice system, or experience in anti-corruption or law enforcement operations in other jurisdictions.
