DBT is looking to recruit an accomplished Private Secretary on an interim basis, who will report into the Chief of Staff and be part of a small team to support the Director. You will have unparalleled insight into the varied and complex issues that cross the Director's desk and play a pivotal role in the delivery of their strategic priorities.

This opportunity involves joining the private office of the CFO Directorate. As a Private Secretary to the Chief Finance Officer (CFO), you’ll be in a dynamic and challenging role that offers significant development prospects. You’ll gain exposure to strategic decision-making across various functions at the highest levels, working closely with senior officials and stakeholders. Collaborating with the Chief of Staff as part of a small team supporting the Director, you’ll have unique insights into the diverse and complex issues that come across the Director’s desk. Your role will be pivotal in delivering the Directorate’s strategic priorities, which span areas such as Finance, Business Services, Security, and Grants Delivery.

  • You will need:
    1. An Active SC Clearance (Essential)
    2. Excellent Communication and Interpersonal skills
    3. Ability to operate effectively under pressure
    4. Email and Diary Management
    5. Experience working with various internal and external stakeholders and build high quality experience
    6. Experience working within a policy and private office setting and leading on strategy-related tasks

Your responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
  • Assessing the Director’s work priorities, managing their inbox, and responding to emails on their behalf when necessary.
  • Identifying, clarifying, and managing relevant issues within the Directorate before they reach the Director. You’ll act as the initial focus and filtration point, ensuring timely communication of relevant information and advice.
  • Building high-quality relationships with internal and external stakeholders, representing the Director and Directorate as needed.
  • Proactively engaging with officials across the Directorate, the wider Department, and across Whitehall. This ensures the Director is well-briefed on relevant issues, prepared for upcoming meetings, and that officials understand their expectations. You’ll also monitor progress on actions and review notes and submissions for quality and accuracy.
