Radioactive Substance Scientist | Scotland

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Radioactive Substance Scientist to join our team in Scotland. As a scientist specialising in radioactive materials, you will play a crucial role in ensuring compliance with regulations and maintaining safety standards related to radioactive substances. Your work will contribute to protecting the environment and public health.

Responsibilities

  1. Radioactive Material Handling and Analysis :
    • Safely handle and analyse radioactive materials, including isotopes and waste.
    • Conduct experiments, measurements, and assessments to characterise and quantify radioactivity levels.
  2. Regulatory Compliance :
    • Stay informed about relevant legislation, including the Environmental Authorisations (Scotland) Regulations 2018 (EASR) .
    • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements for radioactive substances activities.
  3. Risk Assessment and Mitigation :
    • Assess potential risks associated with radioactive materials.
    • Develop and implement strategies to mitigate risks and prevent contamination.
  4. Instrumentation and Monitoring :
    • Operate and maintain radiation detection equipment.
    • Monitor radiation levels in laboratories, storage facilities, and field sites.
  5. Collaboration and Reporting :
    • Collaborate with other scientists, researchers, and regulatory bodies.
    • Prepare reports, documentation, and data submissions as required.
  6. Emergency Response :
    • Participate in emergency response protocols related to radioactive incidents.
    • Provide expertise during emergencies to minimise impact.

Qualifications

  • Educational Background : A degree in Nuclear Science, Physics, Chemistry, or a related field.
  • Experience : Prior experience in handling radioactive materials and compliance with regulations.
  • Skills :
    • Proficiency in radiation measurement techniques.
    • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
    • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
    • Knowledge of relevant safety protocols and emergency procedures.
