Economist

Role purpose:
The Global Supply Chain Economics & Statistics team is responsible for undertaking detailed analysis of UK critical supply chains, including supply chain mapping; assessing vulnerabilities & criticality; analysing cross-cutting issues & topics; and informing on government policies & strategies aimed at improving supply chain resilience. The team achieves this through undertaking quantitative and qualitative analysis using various sources and engagements to assess new and existing supply chains, producing reports (such as country profiles), and developing analytical frameworks for assessing supply chains.

Reporting directly to the Head of Insights & Analysis (Grade 6), the postholder is responsible for leading their team in:
  • Developing bespoke data driven analytical frameworks for identifying and assessing supply chain vulnerabilities and criticality;
  • Working with internal and external stakeholders to map and assess supply chains;
  • Producing country and sector deep dives and reports to support international network and policy colleagues;
  • Undertaking novel research to address evidence gaps and inform the Directorate’s supply chain strategy and policy; and

Key accountabilities:
The postholder will lead a team of GSS and GES Fast Streamers to provide analytical leadership in the analysis of critical supply chains across the government. They will utilise analysis and data from governments, academia, think tanks, and international organisations to develop analytical frameworks and methodologies to enhance the visibility and assessment of critical supply chains, with the postholder expected to lead the development and incorporation of new datasets, analytical tools, and guidance.

The postholder will support policy customers across the directorate, overseas posts, and other Government Departments, such as in identifying policy levers & interventions to improve supply chain resilience, and in informing policy positions on complex issues such as onshoring. The postholder will ensure that a strong economic rationale underpins HMG interventions.

The postholder will also champion innovation and utilise new and existing data sources to enhance HMG’s role in critical supply chains and will ensure that analysis is disseminated widely across the Directorate and government.
