An Network Engineer role based in Lanarkshire paying up to £35,000 DOE (plus generous employee benefits package and pension scheme).  Working in a dynamic environment within a small infrastructure team providing support to a range of solutions and managing a broad range of ICT infrastructure. 

Your new company

Is a public sector organisation who are going through a rapid period of growth. They are looking for a Network Engineer to provide an appropriate technical infrastructure to support the delivery of the organisation. This includes working with technical peers and management on the ongoing implementation, support and maintenance of all hardware and software delivered from Data Centres and its office, the delivery of appropriate wide and local area networks, and the associated security infrastructure to protect information.

Your new role

The Network Engineer is a critical role within the organisation, reporting to the organisation’s Infrastructure Manager and working within a small, multi-disciplinary Infrastructure team you should be able to demonstrate strong technical networking skills alongside excellent inter-personal skills and experience of managing a broad range of ICT Infrastructure whilst operating within a dynamic environment. With primary responsibility for operational service delivery the role also covers ownership of Infrastructure related tasks whilst representing the team on key projects that are delivered in accordance with the organisations PRINCE 2 / Agile aligned project delivery framework. Some of your tasks will include:

  • Installation, configuration and maintenance of key internal systems including firewalls, switches / routers, connectivity, active directory, DNS, DHCP, storage, email (MS Exchange 2013), printing
  • Ensuring compliance with ISO27001 aligned operational policies and procedures, including in the areas of joiners / leavers processes, access control, system monitoring, updates / patching, backup / restores and AV / malware protection
  • Working with Software Development Teams and the organisations Product Architect to provide infrastructure related guidance and support
  • Creation of virtual machine builds (windows and Linux) to agreed build levels / standards

What you'll need to succeed

A solid background in infrastructure will ultimately lead you to your success, with networking, Cisco Nexus, MS Exchange being key components within your experience – this experience should emerge from working at 3rd line infrastructure support level within a Medium to Large Enterprise organization. This is a challenging role which will have you working on various aspects within the business and possessing a passion for IT and problem solving would be an important factor.

Technical Knowledge & Experience Applicants are required to have knowledge and experience in the following disciplines:
  • Strong network configuration, monitoring and fault resolution skills
  • Hands on experience in the implementation and ongoing support of Cisco enterprise level technologies ideally Nexus level switches at core and ASA firewalls
  • Windows Server 2008 / 2012
  • Microsoft Hyper-V (including clustering)
  • Virtualisation
  • IBM Blade / Enterprise Level SAN Technologies (preferably IBM v7000)
  • Firewalls (preferably Cisco, Checkpoint)
  • TCP/IP, Ethernet, DNS/DHCP
  • VPN Technologies
  • Multi Domain Active Directory & Group Policy
  • Backup Exec
  • Microsoft Exchange
  • Experience of designing, monitoring and troubleshooting networks with > 10 VLAN’s is essential
  • Broader experience across the infrastructure technology stack including administering enterprise storage SAN technologies, configuring LUN’s from disk pools to be presented to the compute layer as shared storage for Hypervisor Clusters via Fibrechannel connectivity
  • At the compute level, have worked with Clustered Hypervisor implementations ideally, utilising Microsoft Hyper-V however, exposure to a clustered VMware solution would provide similar working concepts / would be considered cross-transferrable
  • Experience of Checkpoint (or alternate vendor equivalent) ‘next generation’ firewall functionality to enhance the security posture in an organization utilising additional protection features above the standard port and protocol based firewalling.
Exposure to Administrating the deployment and supporting of Linux in an enterprise environment alongside the above would also be highly advantageous

  • 35 hours of duty per week (business hours 08.30 to 16.45 Monday to Friday)
  • Flexi-time – no core hours but expectation is that normally staff are present around the start / finish times above (however, later/earlier times can be accommodated, within reason)
  • Flexi-leave – up to 9 days per year can be taken (plus late starts, early finishes as reasonably necessary)
  • Flexible working – staff can apply to work different hours (subject to business needs)
