G&W UK/Europe Region offers a range of logistical solutions based around its three core service platforms of Rail, Road and Terminals. G&W is unique in the rail industry, owning or leasing more than 122 freight railroads organised in nine locally managed operating regions with 8,000 employees serving 3,000 customers. We have acquired over 100 railroads since 2000 including UK companies Freightliner and Pentalver. G&W are currently creating a new Shared Service Centre in Birmingham city centre and as a result are now recruiting for a significant number of Accountant positions.

Your new role

Reporting into the Finance Operations Manager as part of this newly created team you will take full ownership of the fixed asset accounting, however, you will also gain exposure to additional management accounting activity. will take place. The Fixed Asset Accountant will play an integral role as part of the Management Accounts/R2R team and will be responsible for driving process improvements, increasing efficiency and developing working relationships across the business. Key responsibilities include: -

  • Monthly reporting and reconciliation of Asset ledger
  • Running off monthly depreciation, write of assets
  • Maintenance of fixed asset register including uploading of additions, disposals, asset transfer files and checking that assets are not duplicated
  • Creation & posting of General Ledger journals to reflect the above
  • Ensuring all approvals of fixed asset expenditure & projects are in place in line with company guidelines
  • Valuation of disposals and impairments
  • Follow up and tracking KPI's on asset utilisation
  • A detailed understanding of capitalisation rules in line with appropriate accounting standards and be confident challenging the business where accounting policies or standards are not being adhered will be required

Experience required

Our client is ideally seeking candidates with at least 5 years’ management accounts experience in a large and complex shared services environment (or similar) and they are open to considering candidates who are qualified, qualified by experience or in their final stages of study. To be successful, you will need to possess fixed assets experience combined with excellent communication and problem-solving skills and a pro-active attitude.
