Hays Construction & Property are excited to be working in partnership with Corby Borough Council who are looking to recruit a Planning Assistant into the strategic planning department. Corby Borough Council is a success story and one of the fastest growing places in the UK, their Corporate Vision is to double their population to around 100,000 by 2030 and they are the Academy of Urbanism's 2018 Great British Town. Corby is situated in the heart of England with excellent road links via the A14 to the M1, M6 and A1 and a direct passenger rail service to London.

Planning Assistant

This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone who is looking to forge their way in local government planning. Not only will you have the chance to learn and develop in the role, there is a structure career path set out.

The purpose of the role is to contribute to the provision of an effective and up to date Local Plan service by handling a range of planning policy and related issues commensurate with progression on the career grade. In particular the role will be responsible for managing data for the local plan and monitoring the industrial, commercial, housing, population and employment information.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To assist in the preparation, monitoring and the review of the Local Plan and other planning policy documents.
  • To assist in the development of Neighbourhood Plans, including preparation of guidance and attending meetings.
  • To assist in the designation and the review of Conservation Areas
  • To assist with the processing of applications for diversions and extinguishments of Public Rights of Way.
  • To administer Street Naming and Numbering process in line with statutory obligations, including consultations and liaison with all interested parties.
  • To advise and liaise with other services within the Council, other organisations and the public on planning policy matters.
  • To assist the Principal Planner in achieving continuous improvement in delivery of the service through best practice, innovation and team working, in line with best value principles.
  • To utilise project and programme management techniques, ICT and other professional software in the efficient delivery of services
  • Maintain professional competence through continuous professional development, including up-to-date knowledge by reading/using national planning policy, legislation and other sources of relevant information. Disseminate ideas and information to colleagues.
  • To represent the Principal Planner at meetings with Officers of other Local Authorities, or with other stakeholders, e.g. at User Groups.
  • To carry out any other duties and responsibilities within the overall job purpose as directed by the Principal Planner or the Planning Manager.
  • Ensure that the Health & Safety of themselves and all others affected by their work is a priority and Health and Safety procedures and policies are strictly followed and adhered to.

Person Specification

  • Minimum of two A level qualifications or equivalent
  • Degree or Diploma in relevant subject or equivalent, e.g. Town Planning, Urban Design, Conservation, Architecture, Geography
  • Experience of delivering good customer service
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Local Plan and neighbourhood plan system and processes
  • The ability to produce well structured and coherent reports
  • The ability to communicate and negotiate confidently with people at all levels
  • Willingness and commitment to continuing professional and personal development
