Bioinformatics Manager

Bioinformatics team leader for company in Scotland. Hands-on biological data analysis & project management


Your new company
Is a successful and growing bioinformatics company looking to add several new bioinformaticians to their team, at both scientist and team leader/manager level. The company is based in the Central Belt area of Scotland and has grown significantly over the last couple of years.


Your new role
You will be managing a team of bioinformaticians, providing technical leadership, training and oversight; working on projects for multiple clients.
As well as people management, you will be working closely with clients to analyse large scale complex data sets from biological / healthcare sources, taking responsibility on multiple projects across areas as varied as microbiome work, plant genomics and patient biological data.

Main responsibilities will include:

  • Leading a team of 3-4 bioinformaticians;
  • Providing training and development, as well as technical insight on projects;
  • Discussing project scope and focus with clients;
  • Data analysis, especially of NGS and wider genomic data sets, eg WGS or RNA-Seq, proteomic or metabolomics data;
  • Liaising with stakeholders, collaborating partners and customers;
  • Hands-on pipeline management and optimisation for genomic data analysis;
  • Programming in R and/or Python;
  • Data interpretation; and
  • Working across multiple concurrent projects.


What you'll need to succeed
As well as excellent communication, problem solving and team-working skills, you should have:

  • A BSc / MSc (or equivalent) in statistics, mathematics, bioinformatics, computer science or life sciences, with higher degrees (eg PhD) preferred;
  • Team leadership experience, ideally including direct line management of a small team of bioinformaticians / data scientists;
  • Statistical analysis of data sets, ideally with pharmaceutical, healthcare or biological data, eg NGS, WGS, Exome, genome, proteome, metabolome, microbiome or transcriptome;
  • Good hands-on programming skills, ideally with R, although skills with languages such as Python, Perl, Matlab, C/C++, Java, or Perl would also be useful;
  • Experience with NGS or other genomic analysis work, eg Exome, RNA-Seq, ChIP-Seq or similar;
  • A track record of working with databases, ideally biological, and using languages such as SQL to write queries; and
  • Data visualisation and analysis.

Candidates who have excellent technical abilities, alongside project management experience and are looking to make the step up to line management are also encouraged to apply.
