This Global Pharmaceutical Services organisation was founded by a team of industry veterans in 2015 and is an expanding Contract Development and Manufacturing Organisation (CDMO). The company has built a global site footprint, by acquiring facilities from leading pharmaceutical companies with demonstrated records for the highest quality and regulatory standards. Currently the company’s portfolio of seven sites has facilities in Puerto Rico, North America and across Western Europe. The facility in Bristol was acquired from a Global Pharmaceutical Company in December 2016 and has approximately 220 employees. The site has developed and manufactured a number of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) since 1970. It currently manufactures intermediates and APIs for two important medications.
Job Description

We are looking to recruit a Large-Scale Laboratory (LSL) Plant Manager to lead the performance of the LSL as an effective production facility. This role will require the successful candidate to ensure robust and reliable performance of the LSL. They will utilise their past experience to oversee the development and maintenance of compliant protocols that enable the efficient accommodation of new products, new processes, new technology and new equipment. The successful candidate will engage with the dynamic commercial environment, seeking to optimise the profitability and strategic benefit of the facility; establishing themselves as a credible ‘figure-head’ for the facility. They will look to make important multi-dimensional judgements on current and future capacity and capability: establishing an operating model sufficiently flexible to meet the current range of demands, whilst anticipating potential future asset demands and capability requirements. This will require the taking of risk based decisions on how to enable these to be met.


  • Takes responsibility for the performance of the LSL and its associated services.
  • Takes responsibility for the SHE performance of the Large Scale Laboratory, actively promoting SHE as a priority, ensuring compliance with standards and policies and with legal requirements.
  • Uses personal knowledge of development and manufacturing timescales to risk manage and operationally plan the asset and its resources, to ensure customer commitments are achieved.
  • Provides managerial leadership of development and manufacturing activities within the facility, monitoring projects from concept to delivery; working closely with the Customer Facing project manager to ensure all customer and financial commitments are met.
  • Keeps own knowledge of best practices and new developments up to date.
  • Engages with potential and current customers to manage their needs and expectations across a broad range of services to provide a high quality, timely and cost-effective service.
  • Employs prepared information to discuss, plan and help carry out improvement plans, priority setting, investigation reports, quality or performance improvement recommendations.
  • Develops contacts across a range of departments and external groups.
  • Ensures adequate supervision, instruction and training is provided.
  • Manages the LSL budget(s).

   Essential Skills & Experience

  • Degree level or equivalent (most likely in a chemistry related discipline).
  • Experience of organic chemistry laboratory working practices and laboratory equipment.
  • Experience of managing or working within a LSL (or equivalent).
  • Experience in organic process development and scale up with a good track record in the resolution of chemistry and scale up issues.
  • Understanding of analytical development.
  • Experience of GMP, particularly in a Development Laboratory and LSL environment.
  • Experience/knowledge of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient manufacture.
