Information rights are an increasingly important aspect of our society, whether that involves data security, protection from nuisance calls or rights of access to information held by public bodies.
The ICO is the UK’s independent public body focussed on upholding information rights in the public interest. Our work involves regulating the Data Protection Act, Freedom of Information Act and related legislation. We educate organisations and the public, promote good practice and take enforcement action against those who abuse or are reckless with the personal information they hold about people.
This is an exciting time to work with the ICO. We are involved in an expanding range of issues from intrusive technology, the gathering and re-sale of personal data, and the impact of the internet on privacy and personal information. We are also planning for significant legislative reform to help ensure that the protection of personal data keeps pace with technological developments and the digital economy.
We have influence at home and abroad, with an international remit collaborating with data protection authorities world-wide, and we use our powers to take tangible action to protect the public.

About the Role
The Deputy Chief Executive will play a major role in the leadership and governance of the ICO, both as a member of the ICO board and by the supporting the Commissioner to fulfil her role as Chief Executive.
The successful applicant will manage the delivery of a major, organisation-wide change programme, as well as having strategic leadership and oversight of a number of critically important business functions. These include Customer Services, IT, Finance, Organisational Development and Information Governance, which comprise over 150 staff. You will also fulfil the board level role of Senior Information Risk Owner (SIRO),and be accountable for the ICO’s compliance with the legislation we regulate.
You will ensure that the functions within your remit deliver high quality, cost effective services to the ICO itself as well as to its customers. You will play a major role in developing a new funding model for the organisation, liaising with senior government staff, and preparing the ICO to deliver the demands emerging from forthcoming Data Protection reforms.
You will be an experienced and influential leader with a track record of successful, comprehensive, organisational transformation. You will need to demonstrate experience of effectively managing significant staff and budget numbers – driving forward increased organisational capability and value for money.
You will have broad based senior management experience which will enable you to manage specialist departments and experts from outside your individual professional discipline.
You will have the intellectual ability to get to swiftly grips with Data Protection and Freedom of Information and related legislation, although previous experience in these areas is not necessary.
