About us
Information rights are an increasingly important aspect of our society, whether that involves data security, protection from nuisance calls or rights of access to information held by public bodies. The ICO is the UK’s independent public body focussed on upholding information rights in the public interest. Our work involves regulating the Data Protection Act, Freedom of Information Act and related legislation. We educate organisations and the public, promote good practice and take enforcement action against those who abuse or are reckless with the personal information they hold about people. This is an exciting time to work with the ICO. We are involved in an expanding range of issues from intrusive technology, the gathering and re-sale of personal data, and, the impact of the internet on privacy and personal information. We are also planning for significant legislative reform to help ensure that the protection of personal data keeps pace with technological developments and the digital economy. We have influence at home and abroad, with an international remit collaborating with data protection authorities world-wide, and we use our powers to take tangible action to protect the public. In summary, our work has never been more important.
